Tanzanite is the blue-violet variety of the calcium aluminum sorosilicate mineral zoisite [Ca₂Al₃(SiO₄)(Si₂O₇)O(OH)], found exclusively near Merelani Hills, Tanzania — the only known source in the world. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system at Mohs 6.5 and is strongly trichroic, displaying three distinct colors (blue, violet, and burgundy) depending on viewing angle. The signature blue-violet color is caused by trace vanadium and is typically enhanced by gentle heat treatment — a standard, accepted industry practice. Discovered in 1967, tanzanite is geologically approximately 585 million years old. Mini-size pieces, randomly selected.
Origin: Tanzania | Crystal System: Orthorhombic | Hardness: 6.5 | Composition: Ca₂Al₃(SiO₄)(Si₂O₇)O(OH) (V-bearing)
Associated with the third eye and crown chakras, tanzanite is considered a stone of spiritual vision and inner transformation — fitting for one of Earth's rarest minerals.
