Opal doublets are layered gem constructions: a thin slice of natural opal bonded to a dark backing material (typically ironstone or black potch), which dramatically enhances the play-of-color display by increasing contrast behind the opal layer. Natural opal is a hydrated amorphous silica [SiO₂·nH₂O] with a Mohs hardness of 5.5–6.5. The renowned spectral color play results from light diffraction through a regular array of silica spheres 150–400nm in diameter. Brazilian opals frequently display warm red, orange, and green fire patterns. Lot of 5 doublet cabochons, ready for wire wrapping and jewelry fabrication.
