A striking hand-carved Black Obsidian Crow, sculpted from naturally glossy volcanic glass and finished with an elegant, almost mysterious presence. The carving depicts a watchful crow perched upright, with a long defined beak, rounded breast, folded wings, carved feather details, and a sweeping tail that curves into the substantial base of the piece.

The deep jet-black obsidian is especially well suited to this design. Its naturally glassy polish catches the light along the bird's head, beak, wings, and tail, revealing the contours of the carving while allowing the recessed feather details to remain dark and dramatic. Viewed from different angles, the combination of polished surfaces and carved lines gives the piece considerably more dimension than its monochromatic color initially suggests.

As shown in the hand-held photograph, this is a small but substantial palm-sized carving, with enough weight and presence to display beautifully on a shelf, desk, altar, mineral cabinet, or alongside other animal and bird carvings. Each crow is individually carved from natural obsidian, so minor variations in shape, polish, carving detail, and the stone itself should be expected and make each piece unique.

Crows and ravens have fascinated cultures throughout human history and folklore. Highly intelligent and observant in the natural world, they have become enduring symbols of wisdom, transformation, mystery, adaptability, prophecy, and the ability to perceive what others overlook. Combined with the dark reflective surface of obsidian, the crow makes an especially compelling subject for a stone carving.

Scientific Description

Black obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed when silica-rich lava cools so rapidly that mineral crystals have little or no time to develop. Its characteristically smooth, glassy appearance and conchoidal fracture made obsidian an important material for cutting tools, projectile points, ornaments, and ceremonial objects in numerous ancient cultures.

Metaphysical Description

In modern metaphysical traditions, Black Obsidian is associated with grounding, protection, self-reflection, and bringing hidden matters into awareness. Paired with the crow's symbolism of intelligence, transformation, and insight, this carving is often chosen as a symbolic piece for discernment, personal change, and navigating the unknown.
