Why 'Paraíba' Might Not Be the Right Name for Ethiopia's New Tourmaline

"Paraíba tourmaline" isn't a mineral species — it's a place. Specifically, it's a state in northeastern Brazil where, in the late 1980s, miner and prospector Heitor Barbosa unearthed a copper-bearing tourmaline unlike anything gemologists had documented before: an electric neon blue-green with no real precedent in the gem world. Naturally, the trade named the new sensation after where it was found.

The trouble started when the same copper-bearing tourmaline turned up in Nigeria and then Mozambique in the years that followed. Was it still "Paraíba" if it didn't come from Paraíba? The gem trade argued about this for years. In 2006, the Laboratory Manual Harmonisation Committee (LMHC) — a body that coordinates naming standards across major gem labs — settled the dispute by ruling that "Paraíba" would function as a varietal name (based on copper content and color), not a strict geographic indicator. Labs like the AGTA-GTC adopted a policy of calling all cuprian elbaite tourmaline "Paraíba tourmaline" on reports, regardless of where it was mined — while still noting non-Brazilian origin separately on the report itself, along with a standard disclosure: "The variety name paraíba is derived from the locality in Brazil where it was first mined."

That compromise made sense as an industry standard once Nigeria and Mozambique were established, verified sources. It's a much shakier fit for Ethiopia's reported deposit right now, for one simple reason: no lab has actually confirmed the material is from Ethiopia at all. SSEF, the Swiss lab at the center of this story, has been explicit that its preliminary trace-element testing on the stones in question shows "considerable overlap" with Brazilian material — meaning some of these stones may not even be reliably distinguishable from Brazilian Paraíba, let alone confirmed as a new locality.

Slapping a name derived from a specific Brazilian town onto unconfirmed material from a different continent — before the origin science is even settled — risks doing exactly what the 2006 LMHC compromise was designed to avoid: letting marketing get ahead of geology. The neutral, technically accurate terms already exist and are already used in the gemological literature: cuprian tourmaline or cuprian elbaite. Neither implies a location that hasn't been verified. Both describe exactly what makes the stone rare: copper in the crystal lattice, full stop.

There's a case for going further, too. If Ethiopian origin for some of this material is eventually confirmed by SSEF or another major lab, it would be reasonable for the trade to develop a locality-specific descriptor for it — the way "Mozambique Paraíba" is already used informally to distinguish that material in the market, without erasing the Brazilian original's name recognition. Ethiopia's material, if it's real and if it's distinct, deserves to be known on its own terms rather than borrowed ones.
