Polished malachite showing concentric green banding

Malachite: The Banded Green Stone of Transformation

Malachite is instantly recognizable: rich, saturated green in concentric, almost fingerprint-like bands. That color isn't a coincidence of geology — malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide (Cu₂(CO₃)(OH)₂), and it owes its vivid hue to the same copper chemistry that turns the Statue of Liberty's surface green over time.

Malachite crystallizes in the monoclinic system at a Mohs hardness of 3.5–4, and it forms as a secondary mineral in the oxidation zones of copper ore deposits — meaning it typically grows where copper-rich fluids have interacted with other minerals near the surface. It's commonly found alongside azurite, chrysocolla, and cuprite. The banding so prized by collectors reflects the mineral's growth pattern, often in botryoidal (grape-like) or stalactitic masses that get sliced and polished to reveal the pattern within.

Our malachite is sourced from the Democratic Republic of Congo, one of the world's most significant sources of fine banded material. In metaphysical traditions, malachite is considered a stone of transformation — its intensity often described as direct and powerful rather than gentle, associated with the heart chakra.

Because malachite contains copper and is relatively soft, we recommend handling polished pieces with care and keeping them for display rather than everyday wear against skin. See our current malachite pieces to find one with banding that catches your eye.
