Japanese Researchers Find Record 'Invisible Gold' Locked Inside Seafloor Pyrite

Researchers studying seafloor deposits off the coast of Japan have found the highest concentration of "invisible gold" ever recorded in pyrite, the iron sulfide mineral commonly known as fool's gold. The team, led by Yuichi Morishita, published the findings in Scientific Reports in July 2026, describing gold locked directly into pyrite's crystal lattice rather than existing as visible flecks or nuggets.

The samples came from the Higashi-Aogashima Knoll Caldera, part of the Izu-Ogasawara volcanic arc about 360 kilometers south of Tokyo, collected from a hydrothermal field roughly 700 meters below the surface. Using secondary-ion mass spectrometry, a technique sensitive enough to detect trace elements atom by atom, the researchers measured gold concentrations up to 1.9 weight percent, or 19,231 parts per million, in some pyrite grains. That dwarfs the 0.01 to 43 ppm typically reported at seafloor deposits, and even exceeds the roughly 275 ppm previously found in visible gold grains at this same site.

The explanation lies in pyrite's chemistry. Trace amounts of arsenic, lead, and copper distort the mineral's crystal structure, opening up vacancies that allow gold atoms to slot directly into the lattice rather than precipitating out as separate grains. It's a reminder that pyrite, so often dismissed as "fool's gold" for tricking prospectors with its brassy shine, can in the right conditions hold vastly more actual gold, just hidden at a scale no eye or hand lens could ever catch. It's the same mineral chemistry that makes pyrite specimens like the ones in our minerals and specimens collection such striking natural cubes and clusters in the first place.
