Ethiopia's New Copper-Bearing Tourmaline: What We Actually Know So Far

In June 2026, the Swiss Gemmological Institute (SSEF) — one of the world's most respected independent gem-testing labs — announced it had received "credible reports from trade sources" of a new deposit of copper-bearing tourmaline discovered in Ethiopia. If confirmed, it would become only the fourth known source of this rare gem material on Earth, joining Brazil, Nigeria, and Mozambique.
That's a big if. Here's what's actually been established, and what hasn't.
What makes this tourmaline special
Copper-bearing tourmaline — widely known in the trade as Paraíba tourmaline — owes its saturated neon blue-to-green glow to trace amounts of copper (and sometimes manganese) in its crystal structure, a combination found in almost no other gemstone on Earth. It was first discovered in the late 1980s by miner and prospector Heitor Barbosa in the Brazilian state of Paraíba, and the material caused a sensation in the gem trade almost immediately. Similar copper-bearing tourmaline later turned up in Nigeria and, most significantly for supply, in Mozambique — which has since become the dominant commercial source by volume and carat size.

What SSEF actually said about Ethiopia
SSEF's own statement is notably cautious in its language: it describes a report from trade and mining sources, not a confirmed field visit or verified mine site. The timing coincided with something else interesting - SSEF had already received several Paraíba tourmalines for standard origin testing whose results didn't cleanly match any known locality using existing analytical criteria. Researchers began to hypothesize an Ethiopian origin for some of those "unplaceable" stones.
Ethiopian gemologist Haimanot Sisay, who posted about the find, has associated it with Ethiopia's central highlands, according to trade press. Australian jeweler Nicole Winkler has publicly cautioned buyers about getting ahead of the science before origin claims are verified.
Why proving origin is genuinely hard
Gem labs like SSEF determine geographic origin largely through trace-element "fingerprinting" - measuring the ratios of minor elements trapped in a crystal during formation and comparing them against reference databases built from confirmed locality material. SSEF has been candid that its preliminary analysis of the tourmalines in question showed "considerable overlap with stones from previously known localities, and particularly those from Brazil" - meaning that, for now, some stones simply can't be confidently assigned to any single country of origin, Ethiopia included.
SSEF says its ongoing research is focused on characterizing this new material properly and refining the methods used to tell it apart from copper-bearing tourmaline of other origins. That work takes time, and reputable labs are historically reluctant to issue new-locality origin calls until the reference data is solid.
What it would mean if confirmed
Paraíba-type tourmaline in fine quality has never been abundant - even after nearly four decades and three known countries of origin, supply still lags demand, which is part of why it commands some of the highest per-carat prices of any colored gemstone. A genuinely new, productive source would be a meaningful supply event for the trade, though it's far too early to know the scale, quality, or consistency of any Ethiopian material until independent lab research catches up with the trade chatter.
