Carnelian chip beads in warm red-orange tones

Carnelian: The Stone of Vitality and Motivation

Carnelian has a longer resume than almost any stone in our shop. This warm red-orange variety of chalcedony — a microcrystalline form of silicon dioxide (SiO₂) — has been carved, polished, and worn as a gemstone since at least the Bronze Age, showing up in ancient Egyptian jewelry, Roman signet rings, and countless cultures in between.

Its color comes from iron oxide (hematite) inclusions distributed through the cryptocrystalline quartz matrix, giving it a waxy to vitreous luster and a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7 — tough enough for everyday jewelry, which is a big part of why it's remained popular across so many centuries and cultures. Our carnelian comes from Madagascar, available as chip beads for stringing and beadwork as well as free-form cabochons for wire wrapping and settings.

In metaphysical traditions, carnelian is associated with the sacral chakra and has a long-standing reputation as a stone of vitality, motivation, and creative drive — sometimes called a stone for pushing through hesitation and taking action.

Browse our carnelian beads and cabochons to add some warmth to your next piece.
