Amazonite: The Stone of Truth and Communication
Share
Despite the name, amazonite's connection to the Amazon River is murky at best — no amazonite deposits have ever actually been confirmed in the Amazon basin, and the name is generally thought to be a historical mix-up with another green stone. What isn't in question is the color: a soft, cloudy blue-green that's made amazonite a favorite in beadwork and jewelry for generations.
Amazonite is a variety of microcline, a member of the potassium feldspar group, and its color is generally attributed to trace lead and water content within the crystal structure, sometimes combined with structural changes from natural irradiation over geologic time. It typically has a slightly cloudy or turbid appearance rather than the transparency of quartz-family stones, with a Mohs hardness around 6 — solid enough for regular jewelry wear.
We carry amazonite primarily as free-form nugget and chip beads, popular for their ease of stringing into bracelets and necklaces without needing custom settings. In metaphysical traditions, amazonite is often called the "stone of truth," associated with clear communication and calming an overactive mind — fitting for a stone worn close to the throat.
