A 450-Million-Year-Old Crinoid Just Yielded the Oldest Soft Tissue Ever Found in a Fossil

Paleontologists at the University of Oklahoma have identified fossilized soft tissue in a 450-million-year-old crinoid specimen — only the second time this kind of preservation has ever been documented in the group, and the oldest example on record. Dr. Lena Cole and Dr. David Wright, assistant curators of invertebrate paleontology at the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History, made the identification on July 2, 2026, during a research visit to Montréal's Musée de paléontologie et de l'évolution, where the specimen had been housed in the collection for years before its significance came to light.
The fossil, a species called Dendrocrinus simcoensis, preserved its tube feet: small, soft anatomical structures crinoids used to feed, comparable in what they reveal to how teeth indicate an animal's diet and habitat. "Preservation like this is truly one in a million," Cole said. "Crinoid fossils number in the millions, and this is only the second time soft tissues have ever been found." Wright added that the tissue is "more than 200 million years older than the oldest dinosaur," pushing the record for soft-tissue preservation in crinoids back into the early Paleozoic, when these stalked, flower-like animals were among the first inhabitants of Earth's earliest coral reefs.
Crinoids, sometimes called "sea lilies," build their stems out of hundreds of small disc-shaped segments called ossicles — and each ossicle is a single crystal of calcite, stacked like coins to form a flexible mineral backbone. It's a detail collectors will appreciate: the same calcite chemistry that forms the sharp rhombohedral crystals and pyrite-flecked clusters in our calcite collection is what built the skeleton of one of the ocean's oldest animals, one crystal at a time.
